Townsend Public Library

Townsend, MA

Architect: Johnson-Roberts Associates

The architect designed a custom furniture package to compliment the custom woodwork throughout the building. The barrel vault ceiling makes the space seem expansive, yet at the same time quite comfortable. The reading tables, computer tables, and display pieces were all constructed by the Worden Company, based on the architect’s drawings. The custom shelving millwork package by Worden is also clearly in evidence. The primary wood species in this library is quarter-sawn white oak, which communicates an elegant and timeless quality to all the pieces in the space. The Children’s Room was designed in Maple to compliment the softer colors that were used. All table surfaces and canopy tops are linoleum. The Young Adult Room was designed around Worden’s “Stance” table line, for both computer tables and reading tables. The display of new books is reminiscent of a retail bookstore, and makes for enjoyable browsing by patrons.
